Subject: Second "40 years of music" lyrics quiz
Date: Wed Nov 15 03:43:48 EST 1995
Welcome to the second edition of the "40 years of music" lyrics quiz. It
contains songs that were a hit between 1955 and 1994, with a song for every
year. Some were big hits, some are almost unknown nowadays, but all of them
were in the Billboard Hot 100.
Rules are as follows :
* 5 points for the song title, 5 for the artist. There are also 8 bonus
questions in this quiz, each can add 5 points, so you can get a
total of 440.
* All songs were in the Billboard Hot 100.
* The year is the year that a song was a hit in the US (According to
Joel Whitburn's Billboard Hot 100 book), so not when it was recorded.
* When a song was a hit in several years, all those years can be used.
* Cover hits are allowed. When two or more artists/groups had a hit with
it in the same year, all possible answers are correct, except if there
is a difference in lyrics between them (of course in the part that
is given in this quiz).
* Artists/groups and songs can be in the quiz more than once.
* It can always be that some lyrics are incorrect, I apologize for it
* Please return only the answers.
* Answers must be received before Wednesday, December 6th 1995,
09:00 a.m. (Local time).
B.T.W. I try to take only songs that I have access to. This could be a hint
for people who know my musical taste (50's/60's music, country & western and
Rock 'n' roll). This doesn't mean that there aren't other kind of music in
this quiz 8*).

Subject: RESULTS : Second 40 Years of Music Lyric Quiz
Here are the results and answers for my second "40 years of music"
lyrics quiz. Thanks to all participants (33!) for the effort you
all put in it, and thanks for the positive reactions. The third
one is already posted, and I hope you will all join in again. If
you find mistakes (always possible) in the results, please let me
know.
Again, the IDIOTS (DOT) are the winners, and the Delphi Trivia Club
is in second place, but this time, the difference between them is
not as big as the first quiz. Last time, IQ Unlimited was third,
but they fell to nr 13. Starting next quiz, I'll keep an overall
list of the results.

55. A Cadillac a-rollin' on the open road
Nothin' will outrun my V8 Ford
The Cadillac doin' 'bout ninety-five
She's bumper to bumper rollin' side by side.
Maybellene - Chuck Berry
56. Where you'll be lonely
And I'll be lonely
We'll be so lonely
That we could die
Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
[Q] On which label was this song released?
Many people would think Sun for this ("Why would he ask otherwise?")
but it was Elvis' first single for RCA (recorded in Januar 1956).
Number was RCA #47-6420.
57. I'm lonely as I can be
I'm waitin' for your company
I'm hopin' that you come back to me
I'm walking - Ricky Nelson / Fats Domino
58. Doctor and a lawyer and an Indian chief
Now they all dig that crazy beat
Willie and the hand jive - Johnny Otis Show
If you had "Hand Jive" here, you'd get 4 points.
59. I can see Rosa's cantina below
El Paso - Marty Robbins
This song was originally 4:30 min long, but because the
radio stations only played records of 3:00 min maximum, there
was a shortened version on one, and the long version on the
other side of the single.
[Q] For whom did the singer go to Rosa's cantina?
Feleena, the girl he loved. Later Marty Robbins made several songs
which had the same theme : San Angelo (1962), Feleena (from El Paso)
in 1966 and finally the most succesfull of the look-a-likes : El Paso
City (1976).
60. If you're gonna start out
Huggin' me tight
Don't mess around
Just-a hugh me right
A rockin' good way - Brook Benton and Dinah Washington
Revived in the eighties by Shakin' Stevens and Bonnie Tyler
This was the only song nobody knew. There were entrants who
thought it could be "Don't be cruel" (Elvis Presley). BTW, the
version of Bill Black's Combo (who was given once) is an
instrumental song.
61. Well I guess if you say so
I'll have to pack my things and go
Hit the road Jack - Ray Charles
62. Whatever happened to my Transilvanian Twist?
Monster Mash - Bobby Pickett and the Crypt Kickers
Much better guessed as I thought it would. You almost never hear
this song here in the Netherlands, but on the other hand, it's a
very recognizable lyric. This song also hit the charts in 1970 and
1973.
63. I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everythings the same as it was
I can't understand, no I can't understand

Those were the days - Mary Hopkin
69. You don't need a penny
Just to hang around
But if you got a nickel
Won't ya lay your money down
Down on the corner - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Many people corrected my with the lyrics, in which there
was originally "pinhead" instead of "penny".
[Q] Name the album from which this song comes.
Willie and the poor boys
Wasn't really difficult, because they sing the album title in
the song.

78. Sam, every day you waited for her
I've been waiting here for you
Sam, all this time, I've been lonely
I know what you've been going through
Substitute - Clout
Several people tried to guess and came up with
"Sam" by Olivia Newton John. That'd be too easy 8*)
Also, people guessed that it was ABBA, probably
because of the bonus question.
[Q] Name the country that this group comes from
South Africa
79. You're looking good just like a snake in the grass
One of these days you're gonna break your glass
Don't bring me down - Electric Light Orchestra

they weren't in the series, but their cousins (Coy and Vance) appeared
then.

Your body's heck-a-slammin'
If your love is good
Let's get to rammin' (Now)
